Phyllis crosses swords with formidable policeman Sergeant Woolf while handling the case of an elderly woman who is dying of cancer but refuses to leave her house even as the street around her is demolished. When they showed the scene of Chummy checking Avril to see how dilated she was, all I kept thinking was what a weird acting job this must be for those actresses. Julienne confides that the current Superior is lying upstairs willing her succession and the prayers of the dying are very potent. Since then the midwives have been bounced around from shelter to shelter leaving many of the women of the community confused as to where they can get care. Ultimately, reflecting the morals of the era, Mary's baby is removed from her after the birth.
Meanwhile, a young teenage girl who helps her mother with her brothers is also secretly pregnant, and when a baby is left at the convent's front door, the infant's mother must be found. Jimmy reappears, accompanied by his handsome colleague Alec, having been tasked by the council to survey the buildings in the area. Trixie's personal problems continue to increase and she is granted a leave of absence for six months. Lucille cannot bring herself to act upon her new-found feelings for handsome mechanic Cyril Robinson, but ultimately agrees to go on a date with him. Joyous song pours out from Nonnatus House, and everyone joins in the celebration.
However, she meets a woman scarred and frightened after years of abuse at the hands of her husband. One of the other sisters complains that tea is usually a silent meal, but Mildred says this is not a usual day. Cynthia is going to be a nun! Motivated by his visit to the orphanage, Fred collects some discarded toys with the intention to fix them up for the children who have so little. At the pub, a young woman named Linda arrives for a checkup. As a vaccine is introduced to reduce the outbreak in children, the midwives hold a meeting to teach mothers about the disease and encourage parents to sign their children up for the vaccination. The series reiterated once again that Patsy is not a Jenny replacement in the traditional sense.
Her case inspires Trixie to begin voluntary work at the Women's Advice Centre. Brace yourself, because this roller coaster of intense feels is not over yet. Trixie returns from South Africa, but, having stayed at the mother house during her journey home, expresses concerns that Sister Mary Cynthia was not there. Magda is shocked to discover that she is pregnant; after reading the Turners' medical books, she steals from Nonnatus House in an attempt to induce an abortion, but puts her own life in danger. On her way back to Nonnatus House, however, she discovers that the baby is actually alive.
Meanwhile, Jenny befriends Mary, a pregnant teenaged girl from Ireland, who was forced into prostitution upon her arrival in London but wants to try to make a better life for herself and her child. Her mother and sister were killed in front of her, and so she grew to project a sturdy, unyielding personality. Struggling with his additional needs as well as a demanding family brings her to the verge of thinking that her new baby would be better off being adopted. The nurses share a tearful hug. Next, Timothy and his mother shop for Christmas trees, when the worker falls and begins to have a seizure. Trixie asks to come in to see Mrs. But with a lengthy list of to-dos, Betty has no time for those contractions and the experienced mother goes about her business because - been there, done that, five times.
In a week full of terminal illness and impossible choices, it will be tough to show my usual cheek. Episode six gave us a firmer picture of what a Jenny-less Call the Midwife will be like by focusing on Patsy and her dark past. True History: Diane Westbury was in that picture Fred pointed to in the newspaper. Trixie and Sister Evangelina are called to a foreign cargo ship docked in London and discover that the captain's daughter is about to have a baby after her father has brought her along and allowed various members of the crew to have sex with her as a way of relieving the tensions of the long periods spent at sea. Phyllis begins to realise the extent of Patsy's relationship with Delia. Shelagh gives birth to a baby boy. The last memory Lena has of her brother is of him holding the hand of a kind Nonnatan — Sister Julienne — while the bus taking her to the Mother House pulled away.
All they know is that she was sent directly to a farm where she was put straight to work and treated brutally. Man of the House When she returns to Nonnatus House, Valerie confides in Sister Julienne, letting her know that Betty wants the midwives to look into adoption for her. The baby is four weeks early, but the delivery goes smoothly. As a young teen in the early sixties, I think that the one thing that kept me from dropping my panties was the absolute fear of being sent to the Good Shephard Home for Wayward Girls if I would have gotten pregnant. Next, Cynthia visits Victor and cleans his wound.
Outside, the Turners wait for her in a brand new turquoise blue station wagon, big enough for a family of five, a seven-foot tree and possibly a Christmas rabbit. A young teacher, pregnant by a married man, loses her home and her job and is driven by desperation to attempt to abort her own baby,. When the shop is damaged by a fire, Barbara and Fred lead efforts to get the family back on their feet. Cynthia has decided to become a nun. With this help and a less rowdy household, things are looking up for Betty who has a change of heart over the thought of adoption. I know there was more story behind the item that caused the cut but the bandage seemed pretty large and visible. Though it was fun to see Vanessa Redgrave, I don't think I'll miss Jenny all that much - mostly because this is an ensemble show, even if told originally from her perspective.
